HLTAID001 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation

HLTAID001 - describes the skills and knowledge required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines. This unit applies to all workers who may be required to provide CPR in a range of situations, include community and workplace settings.
Industry recommends you update this life saving skill every year to keep knowledge and skills fresh.
Course Content
This CPR course is designed for participants to acquire competency in performing Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). The knowledge and skills will enable participants to sustain life and minimise the consequences until professional help arrives.
Topics include the most up-to-date basic life support principles, understanding cardiac arrest, managing the unconscious, performing CPR, using a defibrillator [AED], legal issues, infection control and reporting.
Industry/ Enterprise/ Licensing Requirements
Many workplaces require a current and up to date first aid certificate as a licensing requirement.
The Australian Resuscitation Council recommends that all those trained in CPR should refresh their CPR skills at least annually. First Aid certificates will also require a refresher every 3 years. Students/workplaces will be advised of this recommendation when undertaking training.
Entry Requirements
-Students must have the physical ability to provide resuscitation by kneeling on the floor and performing two 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR
-Students must be minimum of fourteen 14 years of age
-Students under the age of 18 will be required to provide signed parental consent form prior to attending the course
Delivery Arrangements
Students attend one four hour class which includes training and assessment. Students will practice their CPR skills throughout the session, complete a short written assessment and be assessed on their practical skills throughout the session.
